Hard-Boiled Professional Journalists Gush: He Makes All Things New!

January 24, 2009

Victor Davis Hanson is absolutely right to point out this text from the Washington Post:

President Obama moved swiftly yesterday to begin rolling back eight years of his predecessor’s policies, ordering tough new ethics rules and preparing to issue an order closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay […].

It wrongfully suggests that Bush didn’t care for ethics in the White House or that he didn’t want to close Guantánamo. (Obama has ordered to close it within a year, apparently convinced that his being president will magically provide a solution to the question of what to do with the Gitmo detainees.) It is amazing how Obama does all the old things and everyone calls them new. A telling example is Garrison Keillor calling Obama the “first genuine author-president.” (And never mind that one wonders what benefit Keillor sees in having a president who has written a book. In the case of Obama it didn’t even result in well-worded speeches – metaphores about “gathering clouds and raging storms” and tumbling walls are not exactly awe inspiring.)

The next thing we will hear is the praises of Obama’s brilliant idea to have his office in oval shape.
