We Are All Security Threats Now
Did you know that if you are in favour of local government solutions rather than federal government involvement you are a security threat? Well, thanks to the Department of Homeland Security’s report on “rightwing extremism in the United States” now you know. Furthermore, if you also happen to be in favour of immigration reform or don’t agree on abortion issues with, say, Katherine ‘Late-term Abortion’ Sibelius or Barack ‘Abortion Extremist’ Obama then you are definitely on law enforcement’s radar. And, just for your information, your being pro-life or voting for Proposition 8 makes you the next recruit of white supremacists. But you don’t even have to hold such views. According to Janet Napolitano’s department, it’s enough if you are a soldier returning from employment in Iraq or Afghanistan to be considered a Timothy McVeigh in waiting.
That DHS report is so poorly worded that it’s effectively an insult to veterans and to virtually every American to the right of Pol Pot. Because of its loose phrasing and its lacking in numbers and evidence of actual threats it is basically just setting conservatives of all stripes into a negative light, whether by intention or not. A left-wing version equivalent would be to issue a report stating that being a vegetarian means you’re halfway into becoming a member of an animal-rights terrorist groups. The message of the report is that if you know a veteran or someone who is not happy with President Obama and/or the liberal agenda of the left, then you should watch that person closely because he or she might turn into a violent criminal at any moment.
The White House, of course, is “distancing” itself from the report. As always, Monsieur Obama tries to picture himself as the innocent bystander (who is nontheless the charismatic leader who will guide us into a better future.) After Team Obama’s petty attacks on Rush Limbaugh, Rick Santelli, heck, even Joe the Plumber and so many others who dared to be critical of Obama’s policies during his candidacy or now that he is president, who is to believe that this otherwise pointless report from the DHS is not part of a strategy to marginalise conservatives – and all of them – and to paint them as political extremists?
In any case, you don’t need to worry. Because in order to prevent you and your neighbour from causing any mischief “DHS/I&A will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months to ascertain with greater regional specificity the rise in rightwing extremist activity in the United States, with a particular emphasis on the political, economic, and social factors that drive rightwing extremist radicalization.” Maybe you should retrieve that old, rainbow-coloured batik shirt from the attic and wear it instead of your “Hockey Moms for Palin” sweater in the coming months.
